Stop My Dog From Chewing...Help!
Having a dog was a life long dream. My parents suffered from bad allergies and never allowed me to even look at a canine, let alone bring one home. So when I finished college and moved into my own home, getting a dog was priority one.
Kitt...I named her after that famous black car on T.V. She was a beautiful puppy. Full blooded black lab, happy, fun-loving and extremely playful. We hit it off from the beginning and have never looked back. The joy she has brought me in my life is immeasurable.
I would like to say there were never any problems with Kitt, but any pet owner knows that would be a lie. I remember the first time I left her outside when I went to work. She was just a few months old and already showing signs of being mischievous... I should have been prepared for what was about to happen. I received a call from my neighbor saying she heard Kitt yelping in pain and that I better hurry home. Panicked and expecting the worse I raced home and into the garage. My beloved puppy had managed to get a fishing hook caught in her mouth, and I am sure the pain was excruciating. She had also managed to get the fishing line wrapped around her front paw so that every time she took a step it would cause the hook to lodge deeper into her lip. I got some pliers, removed the hook and watched my dog sprint out of the garage, into the back yard and find her favorite chew toy. So even with a bloody lip she still found time to chew on anything that was around.
Feeling bad about leaving her outside, the next day I decided to keep her inside. What could possible happen? How about coming home to a couch that was completely mauled, and I mean mauled. She had eaten, not chewed, the middle sofa cushion (I am still finding pieces of it scattered around my house to this day) and all four legs of my couch. And they say kids eat you out of house and home!
She continued on her chewing rampage no matter what I did. So when she ate my favorite pair of shoes, I decided something had to be done. A friend of mine recommended a dog training program that had worked for his dog, it is called SitStayFetch. I said what the heck and ordered the program without knowing what was really going to be involved.
SitStayFetch turned out to be the answer to my problem. The training instructions were easy to follow for both Kitt and me, I could not have asked for more. Now I am not saying that Kitt is now the perfect dog, she still has her moments, but I am no longer afraid to leave her alone in my house. And it is very reassuring to know that I will have a couch to sit on when I get home.
