Leash Training 1-2-3 by Claudine Kosier

Leash Training 1-2-3

The most exciting part of your dogs day comes when you break out the leash. As many owners have found out that unless you train your dog, they are walking you and your just hanging on.

Step one when taking your dog out for their walk is to ensure that they are calm when you decide to leash them up. Some tricks to follow are to make your dog sit and stay before you leash them. If your dog follows these directions give them praise and pat them on the head - positive reinforcement is how your dog will learn the proper behavior.

If you pooch does not follow your commands delay the walk until they are ready to listen. This requires patience, but eventually your dog will learn what is expected. Never take your dog out until they have followed your directions - once they do remember the positive praise. By giving in to your animal your teaching them that their behavior is ok and they will continue until you show them the light.

Dogs are smart and they will quickly pick up on the sit/stay action when you break out the leash. Once your animal is leashed do not just let them bolt for the door, make sure they stay until you say it's alright. Once you have the leash on, repeat the sit/stay command and reward your pet with positive praise until they get the idea of what they are supposed to do.

Repeating these steps consistently will help your pet learn at a faster rate. Now your ready for the walk, using a retractable leash allows you to control the freedom your pet will have as you start walking them. Keep your pet under control and on a short leash, if they pull on the lease short pulls followed by "No" will help your pet learn not to pull. Stop your walk and make your dog sit if they continue to not listen, soon your pet will learn to walk by your side without pulling. Once you're more comfortable you can allow your dog more leash to explore and learn.
